This year The Mayors Youth Employment Program has added an applicant career portfolio as a new feature to the program. The career portfolio will contain a collection of helpful guide lines and advice to support each participant as they head towards their first day on the job as well as the career tools and resources that will help them find work in the future. The portfolio has been developed using The Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy’s 2010 Skills to Pay the Bills Curriculum
As you know the program overall structure encompasses a six week period that provides applicants with a holistic approach to understanding the challenges youth face in today’s job market as well as understand the type of skills they will need to be successful employees.
The MYEP (Mayors Youth Employment Program) conducts an orientation week in which core employment skills are introduced and clarified through individual activities, group exercises and cooperate lectures lead by local business leaders like City of Stamford HR and Citibank. The following five weeks incorporate 15 hours of leadership workshops and 140 hours of real world work experience.

Participating Businesses
Thanks to the generous support of businesses, we were able to impact the lives of 55 Stamford students by providing them with summer internships through The Mayor’s Youth Employment Program. For many of these students it was their first job, their first opportunity to explore the “world of work” and their first opportunity to earn money. We are striving to expand the Program and provide these same opportunities to 60 students next summer.
The Mayor’s Youth Employment Program, in partnership with the Stamford business community offers local 16 – 19 year old high school students employment, mentoring, coaching, job skills development, and assistance in college and career planning. We strongly believe that this program will continue to make a difference in a young person’s life, giving him/her a chance to explore a career, build good work habits and earn money for further education while providing local businesses the opportunity to build a skilled workforce for the future.
